After the Freeze: A Few Things Worth Checking at Home

Hope you and your family stayed safe and warm through the recent freeze.
When temperatures drop this low, plumbing systems can take on stress that doesn’t always show up immediately. Even if everything seems fine right now, small issues caused by freezing can surface days (or even weeks) later once temperatures rebound.
Here are a few smart ways you can stay ahead of post-freeze problems.
1. Start Where Cold Hits First
Check outdoor faucets, exterior walls, garages, attics, and crawl spaces for dampness, staining, or moisture that wasn’t there before.
2. Look For Quiet Interior Clues
Watch for musty odors, warped cabinets, soft drywall, bubbling paint, or ceiling discoloration that may signal a slow leak.
3. Listen For “Nothing”
With all fixtures off, your home should be silent - hissing, dripping, or running water sounds can point to a hidden issue.
4. Confirm With Your Water Meter
If the meter shows movement while everything is off, that’s often a sign of a leak somewhere in the system.
5. Run Every Faucet Briefly
Turn on each faucet hot and cold and note any low pressure, sputtering, cloudy water, or discoloration.
6. Keep An Eye On The Next Few Days
Freeze-stressed pipes can fail after temps rebound, so monitor for new stains, damp spots, odors, or pressure drops.
